Senegal 2 -1 Poland: 3 Major Talking Points As Senegal Records Africa’s First Victory In Russia

An own goal by Thiago Cionek and a Mbaye Niang goal was all Senegal needed to grab all points and Africa’s first victory in the world cup.

Here are three talking points from the Otkrytie Arena in Moscow

Aliou Cisse passes Poland test with flying colours

All eyes were on the much maligned coach of the Teranga Lions but unfortunately for the fans, Aliou Cisse passed the test with flying colours. He’s been calumniated for being a conservative back home, but it was same approach that won him the game.

Senegal were not at their best in the first half, but it was they who did most of the running and looked to make things happen.

Their opening goal was heavily deflected and their second was down to a major error Kyrchowiak, but Senegal still deserved the win.

Two-man strike force benefits Senegal

Rather than use Mame Biram Diouf as the focal point in attack, Aliou Cisse instead deployed the Stoke City striker alongside Torino ace, M’baye Niang in a 4-4-2 formation.

While some may have expected Niang to be the most advanced striker, the Torino star instead looked to drop deep and leave Diouf as the furthest man forward with Sadio Mane and Ismaila Sarr making runs behind the strike pair as when and required. Niang often moved to the flanks in search of possession in a bid to help spread play.

With the space vacated by Mane and Sarr, and their markers dragged out of position, Niang looked dangerous wasn’t surprised to see him capitalize on a defensive blunder to register his goal and his country’s second on the day.

Lewandowski has a match to forget

He’s arguably Poland’s star man as his 16 goals in 10 games for Poland in the qualifiers is a testament to the above assertion.

He was hardly involved against Senegal, however, taking just two shots all game- and one of those was a direct free-kick attempt which was expertly saved by Ndiaye.

When in shape, there aren’t many strikers in the world who are better than the Bayern Munich man but he needs to lift his game up to champion his nation’s cause in the World Cup.
