OPINION: Is Seth Hoffman The Right Man For Hearts?

Seth Hoffman struck a forlorn figure in his technical area as his toothless Hearts of Oak side lost 2-0 to Kumasi Asante Kotoko in the Super Clash on Sunday afternoon, and the defeat in Kumasi has left many fans questioning whether he is still the right man for the job at the club.

Hoffman who took over as a caretaker coach after Henry Wellington was relieved off his coaching duties a couple of months ago was visually apoplectic at some of his players’ defending at the Baba Yara stadium with Robert Addo coming in for significant criticism during Hearts’ shoddy defensive display.

Hearts fans are yet to see a blueprint established and developed since he assumed office. He may have been forgiven for some of the failures.

Just about everyone associated with the club accepts that the gaping holes in the club’s squad were there before Hoffman took the reins, after all.

But instead of winning hearts and minds and adapting to the higher expectations at the club, Hoffman has failed to evolve; becoming further and further entrenched in his own defence-centric dogma.

The impression given by his substitutions and post-match press conferences, particularly away from home, was the main aim was always to avoid defeat.

Merely playing for draws, though, has never been enough for a fanbase that yearns for more- and in some cases has witnessed success at the very top level. Diminishing ambition- even if it is difficult to meet that expectation- has never sat well for the Phobians.

Nor should it. What has quickly become evident, even for those who deemed the former Auroras boss’ appointment as a necessary evil following poor results on the pitch during Wellington’s tenure, is the extent to which considerable frustration has started to set in on the terraces as he has been unable to progress Hearts stylistically. This was apparent on Sunday against their sworn rivals.

It’s not just individual performances that need lifting at Hearts. The players seriously need a confidence booster during a tumultuous time.

As it stands now, nothing is certain in the domestic league and this could be a blessing for the Phobians to take a critical look at the technical area as they seek to restore their lost glory.

Having watched Seth Hoffman since he assumed office, do you think he is the right man to lead Accra Hearts of Oak to the Promised Land?
