Songne Yacouba: The defenders' Nightmare

Thanks to missing out on targeted strikers like Abednego Tetteh and Stephen Sarfo, Asante Kotoko were forced with a tough task of strengthening the attacking department that had been the club’s bane in the previous season.

With a tight budget to work with, Paa Kwesi Fabin was left with no option than to look beyond the country and get a player that will fit into his scheme of things.

Many foreign players trooped to the club’s training grounds all in attempt to convince Fabin of their qualities but out of the lot, it was Songne Yacouba who passed the test with his spellbindly consistent performances.

The flamboyant Burkinabe with an ever-changing appearance has shone for his employers since joining them in the latter part of the first half of the season.

With four goals in five appearances, the 24-year-old has run defences ragged. Already a fan favourite, the dreadlocked Yacouba has proved himself as one of the brightest talents in the highly rated Ghanaian topflight league.

Indeed, he is one of the main reasons behind Kotoko’s sudden resurgence and boosting their status of genuine title contenders.

Yacouba is an explosive player who possess a lot of pace, can play on the flanks as a wide forward or a winger, but enjoys cutting inside and using his powerful right foot.

Dribbling and managing to keep possession are two other strong qualities he boasts of. He can shoot with both feet, a dead-ball specialist, and his finishing is strong. An unselfish player, he likes to get in positions to assist his team-mates and create chances.

It is not only his goals that endear him to his manager, team-mates and fans. It is his all-round style; he plays with a vivacity, power and cleverness that uplift those around him and enable him to thrive in variety of positions. Not since Eric Bekoe have Kotoko had a striker so adept to hold-up- play but what really makes him valuable is his work rate.

Yacouba tries to win almost every ball back, even if this means going deep to chase it. Something which you notice with Yacouba is that he draws quite a lot fouls due to his ability to dribble and do the unexpected.

A product of Etoile Filante, Yacouba was expected to become a superstar in Burkina Faso but his move to Stade Malien stifled his development.

Now at Asante Kotoko without the weight of expectation on his shoulders, the Burkina international has the freedom to express himself once again. He’s a dominant presence at the sharp end of Kotoko’s attack, likes to shoot on sight and also strong with his back to goal too making opposition defences extra wary.

The dearth of number 9s in the country has therefore made Sogne Yacouba valuable currency among the lot. There has been remarkable interest in Yacouba due to his excellent displays for Asante Kotoko.

A raft of French clubs have been mentioned but it is uncertain if Asante Kotoko will let go of an asset like him who is an albatross the neck of opposition defenders.
