Bright Korley: Meet The Swashbuckling Ghanaian Predator Turning Heads In Niger

If you have not heard of Bright Korley’s name before, don’t fuss – you soon will. Bright Korley plays for Sahel SC in the Nigerien top-flight. He has quickly established himself as one of Ghana’s hottest prospects, courtesy of some encouraging laced performances for the Niamey- based club.

The Ghanaian attacker and occasionally used as a winger, who has an outstanding work rate, sublime technical skills and a terrific range of passing and an enviable goal scoring ability, has been at the heart of almost every Sahel SC move this season.

So far, the 22-year-old has 8 goals, 3 assists and 7 MVPs to his credit in 13 appearances. He has been in imperious form since joining the West African club in February, scoring on a regular basis and proving the chief creator for others.

Like most Ghanaian strikers, Bright Korley is agile, has good technique and is comfortable playing anywhere across the frontline. Unlike most Ghanaian strikers, the Sahel SC centre- forward is blessed with the one skill that sets good hitmen apart from great ones- a poacher’s instinct.

“Everything about football excites me,” he gushed. “I remember I used to stay awake till midnight to watch football matches on TV.” “I have always dreamt of making a name for myself in football and I think I’m on course to realising that dream.”

Bright Korley is a clever player. He tries to do better and has done better. His ascent has been imperious and extraordinary.
From a young age, Korley was a precocious talent, the sort of irrepressible creative savant that seems to perceive the game in slow motion and makes a mockery of the rigidity of convention.

Like all great artists, his flair was a compulsion!

Bright Korley was born in Kwabenya, a suburb of Accra, Ghana’s capital. He started learning the ropes at Real Royals, a colts club in Madina, which he joined at the age of seven.

Spells with Power House, Horebians FC, Dreams FC (then playing in Ghana’s third tier) and SP Mirren followed. However, it was at SP Mirren that got the best out of Korley- his brilliance and plethora of goals ensured he became a crucial figure of the team.

In 2016, he was instrumental in taking SP Mirren to the round of 16 of Ghana’s FA Cup, where they went head-to-head with giants Accra Hearts of Oak.

Unsurprisingly, Korley’s ability to mesmerise and dumbfound soon captured the attention of some of the top clubs in Ghana but it was the Niamey based club that won the race to sign the youngster.

“I opted for Sahel SC at the expense of other clubs that expressed interest in me because I needed to develop as a footballer and thus needed to align myself with a club that would help me develop.” He gushed

“I have seen and read about a lot of talented footballers who could not reach the level expected of them. Some of the factors that led to this failure could partly be blamed on the clubs they joined in the early stages of their footballing career. I didn’t want to tow that line, hence my decision to join this club (Sahel SC).” He added

The numbers are impressive enough, but watching him on the field, it is impossible to ignore his calm, confident demeanour.

Arriving from a foreign country and does not speak French or any of the local languages is undoubtedly a daunting experience, as is dealing with pressure of playing for Sahel SC, yet the highest compliment one can give to Bright Korley is to admit that he instantly looked like he belonged in the team.

He determinedly overcame the difficulty in adapting to a different culture and style of football in Niger and is providing potential suitors with a great audition in the Nigerien top-flight showing the teams why Sahel SC placed their belief in him

Nicknamed ‘Le Magicien’ among the fans of Sahel SC who visit the General Seyni Kountche Stadion on match days because of the magic he conjures on the pitch.

The Ghanaian prodigy lights up games with his superb dribbles ,remarkable passing and goals, all while married to a non chalant action style.

He so deserves the accolade of a magician. Before the Ghanaian’s arrival at the club earlier this year, the club was placed 12th on the log but after Korley’s inclusion, the club has gone 15 games unbeaten and now placed 3rd on the log all thanks to Korley’s goals and assists- endearing him even deeper in the hearts of the fans.

Athletically built and brave, Korley can hold his own alongside the toughest of centre-backs, but rather than his physique, his guile and intelligent positioning enable him to outwit defenders. His uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time means Korley regularly finds scoring opportunities.

Equally comfortable going for goal with either foot or with his head, and never afraid to miss, it is no surprise that he is the leading top marksman in his club. With skilful feet and a sharp football brain, he has excellent link-up play and can spot a pass. A willing grafter, he’s also not averse to working the flanks and has decent crossing ability. He loves to contribute in the build-up around the penalty area rather than wait for the ball.

When assigned a role on the flanks, his running, control and desire to get into the box makes him a nightmare for defenders, with most full-backs in the Nigerien league lacking anything near the speed or power to prevent him bursting beyond them and causing problems.

There is a hush talk about him switching his nationality to play for the ‘Menas’ of Niger as the football authority seem to have fallen for his style of play.

“I’m absolutely not a world class player but in the learning process. I’m happy with what I have achieved so far, but I am confident I can improve a lot. I have a lot in me and I just need to guard against complacency as I aim for the top.” He quipped

‘Le Magicien’ envisions a career in Europe within the shortest possible time. “I am not someone who rests on his laurels, I’m very ambitious. I think that I’ve still got a lot more to give and I believe the world will know of my prowess when the dream of playing in Europe becomes a reality.”

The motivated, ambitious and tenacious youngster is indeed a delight to watch and would surely be of immense benefit to the nation one day. It would be a travesty beyond compare if Bright Korley does not play to his fullest potential.
