President Akufo-Addo urges Black Stars to break 37-year AFCON jinx

President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo-Dankwa Akuffo-Addo has urged the Black Stars to break the 37 year trophy drought of the Africa Cup of Nations in the upcoming tournament in Egypt which kicks off on June 21, 2019.

His Excellency Akuffo-Addo on Thursday evening had a farewell solidarity get together with the players, technical and the management team of the Black Stars at Jubilee House, Accra, to give the team a much needed morale-booster.

Ghana, has never won the AFCON trophy after winning their 4th title in 1982.

President Akuffo-Addo tasked the Black Stars to lift the upcoming AFCON 2019 in the quest to break the 37-year jinx.

"Thirty million Ghanaians are behind the Black Stars. I'm praying frivolously that the thirty-seven year since we won the AFCON trophy will come to an end this year," President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akuffo-Addo said.

"From 2008 to 2017, we hold the record of six consecutive semi-final appearance and we just need one more step to break the jinx."

"Generally, our record has been outstanding as a football nation among the very best on the continent. The time has now come to improve the record to satisfy the demand for the Cup. Team work is the heart of success," he added.

Ghana are in Group F with defending champions Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
