MATCH REPORT: Ghana 1-0 Gambia - Esso's goal send Ghana to quarter-finals of 2019 WAFU Cup

The home based senior national team of Ghana started their WAFU Cup title defense campaign with a slim victory over Gambia on Tuesday evening.

A second half strike from Hearts of Oak attacker Joseph Esso handed the Black Stars 'B' a ticket to the next round of the tournament.

Coach Maxwell Konadu's side managed to beat the Scorpions of Gambia 1-0 at the Stade Lat-Dior in Thiès.

Skipper Shafiu Mumuni could have netted the opener for the 2017 champions of the tournament but his audacious strike was denied by the woodwork.

The two teams wasted the numerous chances created and set-pieces awarded to them as the first half of the game ended in a scoreless stalemate.

After the break, Ghana piled pressure on the Gambians which earned them the only goal in the game after twenty minutes.

On the 65th minute, Joseph Esso powered the Black Stars to a victory after making good use of Moro Ibrahim's pass.

The Scorpions of Gambia gained possession to dominate the match after Ghana had taken the lead.

Talisman Mohammed Cham squandered a spot-kick awarded to the Gambians on the 80th minute.

Mumuni could have doubled the score for Ghana with a late goal but he wasted a goal glaring opportunity in the dying embers of the match.

Ghana have now progressed into the quarterfinals of the Cup competition
