Budu’s Corner: Why Michelle Sarpong Could Become A Key Figure At Hearts

You would have to be a pretty die-hard Asante Kotoko fan not to have enjoyed the goal scored by Michelle Sarpong when Hearts of Oak played Cape Coast Venomous Vipers in a friendly recently. The Hearts forward provided us with yet another magical performance capped it with a brace but it was the second goal that got all gathered in awe.

He picked up the ball in the opposition’s half before dribbling past his opposition, finding space between six defenders and netting the goal in the back of the net. Having gain promotion to the senior team from Auroras last season after Kim Grant assumed the role of a manager at the club, the tricky forward didn’t disappoint in his debut season.
Chalk on his boots, pace to burn, step-overs galore, back heels aplenty, Cryuff turns and rollovers were all part of the artillery the young lad unleashed on the opposition defenders he came up against. Sarpong plays a play-making role and occasionally a free- attacking role. He is comfortable attacking on either wing or through the centre of the pitch. He lets his football do the talking, with the forward continuously scoring outrageous goal after outrageous goal- yet he remains calm and composed, and never appears fully content.
He is a joy to watch when in possession and when he decides to dribble past players. It’s not rare to see him go past two or three of them in just one of his runs. With his magnetic left foot, he has the penchant of faking a pass, faking a shot, faking a direction in movement before he bursts away and leaves his markers chasing shadows. His team-mates and fans alike find it amusing. His opponents, however, don’t find it amusing.
The player’s dedication and work ethic is second to none and that is exactly why Kim Grant believes he has such a bright future. For all the talk of how atrocious the Phobians have been in friendlies played in the offseason, they have an outstanding prospect on their hands who has all the qualities needed to boost the squad. He has so far scored five goals and recorded many assists in the club’s friendlies.
Not since Winful Cobbina have Hearts had a forward so adept to hold-up- play, dribbling and incisive passes but what really makes him valuable is his work rate. Sarpong tries to win almost every ball back, even if this means going deep to chase it. Something which you notice with Sarpong is that he draws quite a lot fouls due to his ability to dribble and do the unexpected.
Arriving from lowly Auroras with no experience at the topflight is undoubtedly a daunting experience, as is dealing with pressure of playing for Hearts of Oak, yet the highest compliment one can give to the young lad is to admit that he instantly looked like he belonged in the team.
Simply put, Hearts of Oak is a better team whenever Michelle Sarpong is in the lineup.
In Sarpong, the Phobians have a player they can build around, a player already at the level they crave to return to. He remains one of the club’s most influential and consistent stars. He isn’t one for the future, he’s thriving already.
