Why Asante Kotoko Must Be Wary Of Kariobangi Sharks

Kumasi Asante Kotoko were poor last term; there is no hiding from it. They were eliminated in the preliminary stage of the competition by Congolese side CARA Brazzaville.
Continentally, they’ve been faced with disturbing disparities, one with devastating force and another where they have barely shown up. Saturday’s tie against Kenya’s Kariobangi Sharks at the Kasarani stadium will prove to be a difficult test for the Porcupine Warriors. Sharks, a side that encapsulates a dogged determinism and a destructive dynamism, there will be no quarter given; Asante Kotoko will not be allowed to slip for a moment.
Kariobangi Sharks placed 6th on the log last term but won the Kenyan FA Cup hence their participation in the CAF Confederation Cup- having played 39 games in all competitions, they won 17, lost 9 with 13 draws, scoring 53 and conceding 29 in the process.
Kariobangi Sharks may not be a household name on the continent at present considering their pedigree in continental club competitions vis-à-vis their Ghanaian opponents who are giants on the continent but they can’t be underestimated.
Kariobangi Sharks have in their fold last season’s top scorer of the Kenyan Premier league; Eric Kapaito who scored 17 goals to achieve this feat, so do they have Sydney Lokale, another dangerous player who plays behind Kapaito. As a club that thrives on counter attacking football, their tricky wingers of James Mazembe (LW) and George Abege (RW).
The Porcupine Warriors need to be very cautious when attacking and also do their very best to prevent Lokale and Abege from crossing the ball. Kotoko’s midfield will also need to outplay the ingenuity of midfield maestro Patillah Omotto.
Asante Kotoko are at a point where this tie will define the success or failure in the competition. Should C.K.Akonnor and his charges win the game, it will be a glorious one.
The problem is that William Muluya and Kariobangi Sharks don’t give a jot about this and perhaps offer the Ghanaians one of the toughest ties they could have faced. There will be no room for error, no complacency, and the Porcupine Warriors will have to show a side of them that even their most loyal fans are not sure they have.
To achieve that, they must first play above themselves and ensure they won’t replicate the lackluster performances that characterized their play in the previous campaign that saw them being edged out by CARA Brazzaville.
