Egypt will cross swords with Mozambique in the opening fixture of Group B at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The competition commenced on Saturday with host nation Senegal beating Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in the opening game at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé.
Whiles Egypt are desperate to win the competition for the eighth time in their history, having lost two finals in the last three editions, Mozambique will be playing in their fifth AFCON and have made four appearances already, in 1986, 1996, 1998 and 2010.
The Pharaohs had a stellar run in the qualifiers having won five and lost one to finish as winners of Group D with 15 points, over Guinea, Malawi and Ethiopia.
The Reds have been impressive and have four wins in their last five matches and are unbeaten with just a draw, and humbled Tanzania in a pre-AFCON friendly, thanks to goals from Mahmoud Trezeguet and an own goal from Manula.
On the opposition end, Mozambique despite being in the same group with Senegal in the qualifiers, managed to finish as the second best team, having won three, drawn one and lost two, and amassed ten points.
The Mambas played two friendlies heading into the competition, and won 2-0 over Lesotho before 11nipping on Alfons Amade's late goal to salvage a draw against Botswana, all in Johannesburg.
