Group A in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament remains fiercely contested following a 1-1 draw between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea on Sunday afternoon.

The 34th edition of AFCON commenced on Saturday, January 13, with Ivory Coast facing off against Guinea Bissau. Ivory Coast displayed a stellar performance, securing a 2-0 victory and setting a positive tone for the hosting nation.

Today, Nigeria clashed with Equatorial Guinea in the second match of Group A's initial round of games.

Despite the Super Eagles' impressive start in the opening 10 minutes, they couldn't convert their opportunities, and the consequence came in the 36th minute when Equatorial Guinea, against the flow of play, equalized through Iban Salvador to take the lead.

Responding swiftly, Nigeria leveled the score two minutes later, with Victor Osimhen finding the net.

Although Nigeria maintained dominance throughout the game, they couldn't secure another goal, ultimately settling for a point as the match concluded. The result leaves Group A wide open, with all teams still in contention for advancement in the tournament.
