Belgian outfit KV Mechelen have announced they have signed Algeria striker Islam Slimani on a short-term deal.

The well-traveled 35-year-old arrives from Brazilian Série B side Coritiba, where he notched three goals and provided two assists in 11 matches in 2023.

Slimani, who is not new to Belgian football, is making a return to the Pro league after having a stint with RSC Anderlecht in the 2022–23 season. He scored nine goals and accrued one assist in sixteen matches.

“Islam Slimani will strengthen the attacking line of KV Mechelen. The Algerian has signed a contract until the end of the season,” a statement read.

“I am happy to be back in Belgium, especially because it is at this beautiful club,” said Slimani after signing, adding: “Together with the team and its supporters, I want to achieve the best, so I am going to give my all.”

Mechelen Sporting Director Tim Matthys revealed the reason for signing Slimani; “Due to the many unfortunate injuries and the departure of Yonas Malede, it was important to give the coach and the team some extra breathing space and options.

“We have succeeded in this through the deal with Slimani. Islam really wanted to come to Mechelen and we are very pleased that he signed with us. The qualities and experience he possesses are an added value for our team. He will also be an important player in the group because he is a natural leader.”
