The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially appointed Samson Adamu as its substantive General Secretary, confirming his position after a comprehensive recruitment process conducted by the continental football governing body.
The appointment was approved by the CAF Executive Committee (EXCO) during its latest meeting, bringing an end to Adamu's tenure as Acting General Secretary, a role he had held since March 2026.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe announced the decision, revealing that the position was publicly advertised and filled following a rigorous selection process involving interviews with several qualified candidates.
Adamu's confirmation marks the culmination of an impressive rise within CAF, having spent the past eight years playing a key role in the administration and organisation of African football.
He joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before being promoted to Director of Tournaments and Events, where he was instrumental in planning and delivering some of the continent's biggest football competitions.
During his time in those positions, Adamu oversaw the organisation of several major tournaments, including the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup and youth and women's competitions, earning a reputation as one of the governing body's most experienced administrators.
His extensive knowledge of football operations, tournament management and governance has made him a respected figure within African football.
Adamu also holds a FIFA Master in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, one of the sport's most prestigious academic qualifications, further strengthening his credentials for CAF's top administrative role.
As General Secretary, he will oversee the day-to-day operations of CAF, implement decisions taken by the Executive Committee and work closely with President Motsepe in driving the organisation's strategic objectives, including football development, governance reforms, commercial growth and the organisation of continental competitions.
His permanent appointment is expected to provide continuity and stability within CAF's leadership as the organisation continues to modernise its structures and strengthen football development across Africa.
With extensive experience in football administration and a proven track record in managing major continental tournaments, Adamu now assumes one of the most influential executive positions in African football as CAF looks to build on its recent progress under President Motsepe's leadership.
