The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has announced Yohannes Sahle as the new head coach of the senior national team, marking a surprise return for the tactician nine years after he last led the Walias.
Sahle, who currently manages Ethiopian Premier League side Fasil Kenema SC, will require formal clearance from his club before officially taking charge of the Walias, as he remains under contract.
The appointment follows the departure of Mesay Teferi in November 2025, leaving Ethiopia without a head coach.
Several candidates were reportedly considered before the EFF moved swiftly to appoint Sahle ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
In a statement, the federation said: “The Ethiopian Football Federation has selected Yohannes Sahle to be the next Ethiopia coach after an evening meeting of the Executive Committee.”
The decision to appoint the veteran gaffer, who is a former player was made at the EFF executive committee meeting held in Addis Ababa on New Year’s Day.
