South African football fans have shown the beautiful game’s power to unite people by raising R40,000 (approximately $2,400) to help a Nigerian Orlando Pirates supporter travel to South Africa for the famous Soweto Derby against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
Miracle Ebubechi Michael, who comes from Owerri in Nigeria’s Imo State, has received an outpouring of support from South Africans determined to help her fulfil her dream of watching one of African football’s biggest rivalries live on Saturday, October 31.
The fundraising effort has gone beyond financial support, with generous fans also offering Michael free accommodation throughout her stay in South Africa.
Her inspiring story has attracted national attention, earning her an appearance on South African national broadcaster SABC, where her love for Orlando Pirates and the kindness shown by local supporters have been highlighted.
The Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is one of Africa’s most famous football rivalries. Every meeting between the two South African giants draws huge interest, with supporters eagerly anticipating the battle for bragging rights.
Despite the fierce rivalry between clubs on the pitch, South African fans have joined forces to help a supporter from another country experience the occasion.
Michael’s story shows that football is about more than goals, trophies and club rivalries.
