Teeming football fans in Nigeria have raised questions over the appointment of Finidi George as head coach of the Super Eagles after they fell 2-1 to Benin.
Nigeria clashed with the Cheetahs at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Bafana Bafana last week.
However, ahead of Monday's showdown, the Super Eagles had an impressive record against Benin, winning 13 of 16 previous encounters with one loss.
But, the fortunes of the Super Eagles didn't improve much as they succumbed to Benin in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier on Monday evening.
Nigerians opened the scoring through Raphael Onyedika, but things did not go as planned as Benin lurked their way back into the game, scoring twice in the first half.
In spite of the Super Eagles robust showing, they were unable to get back on level terms, with Gernot Rohr's men clasping on for the three points.
However, some fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to question the appointment of the coach, now on a two-year contract which is expected to run till after the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
"Who recommended Finidi as Super Eagles coach? I really wanna know. This is hurtful. Now we begin to do calculations to qualify for the World Cup. We couldn’t win our home games, we are still losing to Benin on a neutral ground. Finidi George, thanks for your services, pls resign," a peeved fan Akin Akinwale quizzed.
Another distraught fan Pooja also said; "Gernot Rohr & Jose Peseiro had good eras with Super Eagles, but Nigerians said their football is negative.. Eguaveon says his formation is like Pep but exits in the first round at AFCON. Finidi shows Ferguson's attitude but one point in 2 games. Pure nonsense."
