Ex-Ghana international Asamoah Gyan has commended Abdul Fatawu Issahaku for forfeiting debut apperance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast to focus on club football at Leicester City in the English Championship.

Issahaku, who is currently on loan from Sporting CP, chose to prioritize his long-term future at Leicester City over international duties with the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Black Stars captain in a recent interview said the decision from the 20-year-old winger not to play the AFCON has proven to be a beneficial to his career and has become a key figure at the King Power Stadium outfit.

Gyan in an interview said: “Although we needed him in the national team, but for him not to come to the AFCON, I think is the best decision he made because he had to focus on his playing career and make sure he gets to the height and Ghanaians had patience for him despite little criticism but I think it has paid off.”

Fatawu Issahaku, on loan at Leicester City has played a crucial role in their promotion back to the English Premier League as Championship winners. 

He has netted six goals and provided 13 asssits in 39 league appearances for the Foxes.

Leicester City are expected to cough up €17 million in the summer to acquire the Ghanaian international from Portuguese side Sporting CP on permenant basis.
