Gideon Mensah, the Black Stars full-back, has shared insights into his near move to FC Barcelona five years ago, which fell apart due to a breach of confidentiality.
In 2019, while playing for Red Bull Salzburg, the promising left-back was close to a loan deal with Barcelona, where he would have served as Jordi Alba’s understudy.
However, the deal was derailed when news of the transfer leaked prematurely, violating a confidentiality agreement essential to the arrangement.
Reflecting on the missed chance, Mensah recalled the anticipation he felt. "I couldn't resist thinking about the next flight to Spain," he told Flashscore.
The excitement quickly turned to disappointment when he saw the news circulating in Ghana.
"The next day, I saw it everywhere—Barcelona wants me. So, I called my agent and asked what happened to not saying anything to anyone," he shared. His agent was equally surprised by the leak, unable to explain how the information got out.
Mensah, now playing for AJ Auxerre in France's Ligue 1, has since earned close to 30 caps for Ghana’s national team.
