England-born forward of Ghanaian descent Eddie Nketiah scored his first Premier League goal of the season, but it proved only a consolation as Crystal Palace suffered a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Introduced from the bench in the 72nd minute, Nketiah made an immediate impact by finding the net deep into stoppage time, although the Reds had already done enough to secure all three points.

Liverpool took control of the contest in the closing stages of the first half when Alexis Mac Allister broke the deadlock in the 40th minute to give the visitors a deserved lead heading into the interval.

The Reds tightened their grip on the match shortly after the restart, with Florian Wirtz doubling the advantage in the 54th minute after another well-worked attacking move.

Alexander Isak added Liverpool's third goal in the 89th minute, effectively putting the result beyond doubt and leaving Crystal Palace with no route back into the contest.

Palace, however, managed to reduce the deficit in the fifth minute of added time when Nketiah calmly converted a penalty after the hosts were awarded a spot-kick. The composed finish provided a late consolation for the home supporters and marked the striker's first Premier League goal of the campaign.

Although Crystal Palace were unable to avoid defeat, Nketiah will take confidence from opening his league account after coming off the bench to make an impact.

The 27-year-old will now look to build on that milestone after the November international break as he aims to establish himself as a regular goalscorer for the Eagles during the remainder of the season.
