Ghanaian midfielder Daniel Afriyie Barnieh maintained his impressive form in Switzerland by scoring the opening goal as Aarau claimed a dramatic 2-1 away victory over Yverdon in the Challenge League.
Afriyie wasted no time in making his mark, finding the net in the fourth minute after timing his run perfectly to finish Aarau’s first meaningful attack and silence the home crowd at the Stade Municipal. The early breakthrough allowed the visitors to settle into a disciplined display, remaining compact between the lines while posing a constant threat on the counterattack.
Yverdon responded after the interval, with Mauro Rodrigues drawing the hosts level in the 55th minute as pressure began to mount on Aarau. However, the visitors showed resilience and composure, refusing to concede control of the contest.
Deep into stoppage time, Aarau were rewarded for their persistence when Dorian Derbaci struck in the 93rd minute to restore their lead and secure all three points in dramatic fashion.
Afriyie’s goal takes his 2025/26 Challenge League tally to seven goals and four assists in 19 appearances, further underlining his importance as one of Aarau’s key attacking weapons this season.
Aarau will now shift focus to their next league assignment, a home clash against Wil on Saturday, February 7, as they look to build momentum in front of their supporters.
