Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has hailed Michael Essien as the greatest Ghanaian to ever play in the English Premier League.

Speaking to BR Football, the Bournemouth striker was asked to name the best Ghanaian footballer to grace the league, and he had no doubts about his choice.

“[It] has to be Michael Essien. I want to say Asamoah Gyan just for what he's done at Sunderland, but yeah, Michael Essien, he's the GOAT," Semenyo stated.

Essien, who played for Chelsea between 2005 and 2014, left an indelible mark on the Premier League.

The combative midfielder was instrumental in Chelsea’s dominance under José Mourinho, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League in 2012.

Known for his versatility, powerful strikes, and tireless work rate, Essien became a fan favorite at Stamford Bridge and remains one of Africa’s finest exports to the English top flight.

However, Semenyo's assertion sparks debate, as several Ghanaian players have also had memorable stints in the Premier League. The likes of Tony Yeboah, Sulley Muntari, Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, and Asamoah Gyan have all made significant contributions to their respective clubs.

Tony Yeboah, for instance, was a lethal goal scorer for Leeds United in the mid-90s, producing some of the most iconic goals in Premier League history. Asamoah Gyan made an immediate impact at Sunderland, becoming a club hero despite his brief stay.

Sulley Muntari won the FA Cup with Portsmouth, while Andre and Jordan Ayew have both had extended careers in the league, with Andre notably captaining Swansea City and Jordan becoming Crystal Palace’s all-time top Premier League scorer.
