Ghana captain Jordan Ayew scored his first goal for Sheffield United, but the striker ended up on the losing side as the Blades suffered a 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic in the English Championship on Saturday.
Ayew's maiden goal for the South Yorkshire club briefly brought Sheffield United level at The Valley, but a late strike from Matty Godden handed the Addicks a crucial victory and ended their long wait for a league win.
Charlton made the brighter start and deservedly took the lead in the 12th minute through Millenic Alli, who finished confidently to put the home side ahead.
Sheffield United gradually grew into the contest and found their equaliser through Ayew. The Ghana international rose highest to power home a header, marking his first goal since joining the Blades and restoring parity before the visitors searched for a winner.
The second half remained closely contested, with both teams creating opportunities in an entertaining encounter.
However, it was Charlton who had the final say when Godden struck in the 79th minute to restore the hosts' advantage. His decisive finish proved enough to secure all three points and end Charlton's 11-match winless run in the Championship.
The victory was Charlton's first league success since August 29, lifting the Addicks to 19th place and moving them seven points clear of the relegation zone.
For Sheffield United, the defeat brought an end to a four-match unbeaten run, dealing a blow to their ambitions of climbing further up the Championship standings.
Ayew had been restored to the starting lineup following the midweek victory over Preston North End, with Liam Kitching and Kalvin Phillips also returning to the side, while Mark McGuinness, Jairo Riedewald and Tom Cannon dropped to the bench.
Although the result was disappointing, Ayew will take confidence from opening his scoring account for Sheffield United. The Black Stars captain will now be aiming to build on that milestone as the Blades look to rediscover their momentum in the race for promotion.
