Former Ghana international Michael Essien has delivered a strong vote of confidence in Kamaldeen Sulemana, urging the winger to play with freedom and confidence as Ghana gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Sulemana’s season with Atalanta BC has been far from smooth, with the 24-year-old managing just two goals and one assist in 23 Serie A appearances. However, Essien believes those numbers do not reflect the winger’s true ability, insisting he remains one of Ghana’s most exciting attacking prospects.

Drawing from his own experience on football’s biggest stage, Essien—who featured for Ghana at the 2006 and 2014 World Cups during his time with Chelsea FC—stressed the importance of mental freedom and self-belief, especially in high-pressure tournaments.

“Sulemana is a great talent. I managed to see him here and he’s got a lot of qualities in him,” Essien said.

“He’s a good dribbler, he’s very fast, he’s quite strong. Hopefully he can bring that on board. He has to feel free and be himself when he’s on the pitch, then the rest will come.”

Essien’s remarks come at a crucial time, with the Black Stars intensifying preparations for the Mundial. Sulemana was part of Ghana’s squad during the March international window, featuring in friendly matches against Austria and Germany as the team continues to fine-tune its setup.
