Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has expressed deep admiration for Diego Simeone, crediting the Atletico Madrid manager with playing a crucial role in developing his mental strength and professional growth during their years together in Spain.
Partey, who spent five seasons under Simeone at Atletico Madrid, highlighted how the Argentine tactician’s relentless drive and winning mentality helped bring out the best in him.
“He’s a coach that brings the best out of you mentally,” Partey told broadcaster Kafui Dey. “Because he knows when you are strong here,” he said, pointing to his head, “you can always give your best.”
The Ghana international was promoted to the Atletico Madrid senior team in July 2015 and made 188 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 12 assists before joining Arsenal in 2020.
Reflecting on Simeone’s approach, Partey emphasized the manager’s no-nonsense, results-first philosophy.
“You don’t need to be extra or anything, you just have to win,” he said. “He even wants his striker to come and defend at the back.”
