Manchester United are reportedly plotting a summer move for Ghanaian centre-back Jonas Adjetey, with the 21-year-old FC Basel defender emerging as a serious option as the club looks to strengthen its backline.
According to Africa Foot, the Red Devils have identified Adjetey as a potential addition ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. With the club evaluating several centre-back options, the Ghana international has attracted interest thanks to his strong performances in the Swiss Super League.
Adjetey, a native of Accra, joined FC Basel from Ghana Premier League side Berekum Chelsea in August 2022. After spending time developing in the Swiss club’s ranks, he broke into the first team at the start of the 2023/24 season. Since then, the 21-year-old has made 30 appearances in all competitions, racking up close to 2,500 minutes of action.
His athleticism, positional awareness, and aerial ability have earned him recognition as one of the league’s top young defenders. Several European clubs have taken note, with French side RC Lens having reportedly failed with a €6 million bid for his services last summer.
Despite the emergence of young defenders like Ayden Heaven and the versatility of Noussair Mazraoui, Manchester United continue to assess defensive reinforcements. With veterans Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans expected to leave the club at the end of the season, depth at centre-back is once again a concern.
Adjetey fits the profile of a long-term prospect with room for growth, and United could view him as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive targets like Gonçalo Inácio. Basel are expected to demand a higher fee than Lens' previous offer, but it is unlikely their asking price would be a stumbling block for a club of United’s financial stature.
A potential move to Old Trafford would mark a significant step forward in Adjetey’s career. The Premier League would provide a platform for the young Ghanaian to further develop, and under the right guidance, he could evolve into a top-level defender.
With Manchester United keen to reshape their squad after a disappointing season, Adjetey represents an exciting and affordable option who could contribute both in the short term and the future.
