South African side ORBIT College FC have signed Ghanaian defender Mohammed Abubakar on loan from Ghana Premier League club Karela United.

The 25-year-old joins the Mswenko boys ahead of the second round of the South African Premiership season as ORBIT College look to strengthen their squad.

Abubakar is a versatile defender who can play as a left-sided centre-back or in a defensive midfield role.

He became well known across the continent during his time at Dreams FC, where he helped the club reach the semi-finals of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup. He made six appearances in that competition.

Born in Takoradi in January 2000, Abubakar started his football career with local youth teams before joining Unicon FC at the age of 16. He later made his professional debut with Karela United in 2017.

ORBIT College are hoping his arrival will help improve their defence. The North West-based club have conceded 28 goals in 16 matches and currently sit 14th on the league table with 13 points.

With experienced defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele also in the squad, Abubakar is expected to play an important role at the back.

ORBIT College’s next match is away to Polokwane City as they aim to move further away from the relegation zone.
