Colchester United have finalised the signing of Ghanaian striker Kwesi Appiah from Crawley Town on a season-long loan deal.

Colchester gaffer Wayne Brown has pleaded for further augmentation to boost their attacking options, with that section an area of concern as Samson Jolaoluwa Tovide and Kaan Bennett were the only natural option for the position.

Brown's prayers have been answered in the form of 32-year-old Appiah, who has now completed a loan from fellow English League 2 rivals on transfer deadline day.

Colchester boss Wayne Brown said: “I think it’s important that we bring people in who can have a real impact.

“There’s not many loan signings that are available that have got the numbers that Kwesi has got so I think he’ll be a real asset to us.

“Ultimately, that’s what we’re looking to do be pro-active and productive in the final third and give ourselves the best chance of creating more opportunities to score goals and winning games."

Appiah has made five appearances for Crawley this season but has not featured for them since their home defeat against Northampton, on August 16.

Appiah has found himself out of favour at Crawley this season under gaffer Kevin Betsy and will now be looking to revive his career at the U's.

He is in line to make his Colchester debut when they host Hartlepool United in League Two, on Saturday, September 3.
