Turkey-based defender Jerome Opoku has been ruled out of Ghana's upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Niger due to injury.

Opoku reported discomfort in his left gluteal muscles after training on the poor pitch conditions in Kumasi, where the Black Stars were preparing for their clash against Angola.

A further medical examination confirmed that the pain had worsened, prompting a decision for him to return to Turkey for treatment.

The 24-year-old will undergo ultrasound-guided injections in Turkey, following consultations with his club's medical team. The defender now faces a race against time to recover and be available for his next assignment in the Turkish Super Lig.

This injury setback reduces Otto Addo’s squad to 22 players ahead of the crucial qualifier against Niger on Monday. Opoku was an unused substitute in Ghana's 1-0 defeat to Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
