Henry Asante Twum, Communication Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has explained the absence of defender Gideon Mensah from the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

During a press conference at the GFA headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 29, Twum revealed that Mensah, who plays for Auxerre, is sidelined with a muscle tear.

“Gideon Mensah is out with a muscle tear” he said at a press conference held at the Ghana FA headquarters in Accra.

This injury keeps him out of the crucial fixtures against Angola and Niger.

Mensah is joined on the injury list by Kamaldeen Sulemana, Ernest Nuamah, and Gideon Mensah, all of whom will miss the upcoming matches. Notable players like Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Salisu, and Jordan Ayew have been included in the squad.

Captain Andre Ayew, currently a free agent, has been overlooked for the second consecutive squad selection, raising questions among fans and analysts.

The Black Stars are set to face Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5 and will then travel to Morocco to take on Niger on September 9. The qualifiers are critical for Ghana's aim to secure a spot in the continent's premier tournament. The top two teams from each group will earn automatic qualification to the AFCON.
