Officials from German giants Borussia Dortmund, led by former Black Stars forward Ibrahim Tanko, have touched down in Accra ahead of the official unveiling of the BVB International Academy Ghana — the club’s first-ever academy on the African continent.
The highly anticipated launch is set to take place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, and has received strong support from Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, highlighting its importance to youth football development in the country.
The academy aims to merge Borussia Dortmund’s renowned player development philosophy with Ghana’s rich football culture, creating a structured system to groom young talents. Designed for boys and girls aged between 6 and 18, the project will focus not only on technical skills but also on discipline, education, and character building.
Located at Achimota School, the facility will run a dual-pathway programme that caters to both elite prospects chasing professional careers and young players who simply want access to organised football training in a supportive setting. The model is intended to balance high-performance development with inclusivity.
As part of its community-focused approach, 20 percent of places at the academy will be reserved for scholarship beneficiaries. This initiative is aimed at identifying talented but underprivileged children and giving them access to world-class training opportunities they might otherwise not have.
To commemorate the launch, organisers have lined up a series of activities, including a youth football clinic where participants will be introduced to Dortmund’s training methods. There will also be a public watch party for Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga fixture against Wolfsburg, allowing local fans to connect with the club as the project officially begins.
The establishment of the BVB International Academy Ghana marks a major milestone in strengthening football links between Ghana and Germany while creating fresh opportunities for the next generation of Ghanaian players to develop under an internationally respected system.
