Ghanaian football icon Dan Owusu has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Black Stars under the coaching of Chris Hughton during the 2023 AFCON.

Following their lackluster display against Cape Verde, the team faces a daunting match against Egypt. Owusu, in an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, pointed fingers at Hughton, asserting that the former Premier League manager lacks ideas for the team.

Critiquing Hughton's role, Owusu emphasized, "Chris Hughton served as a technical advisor to Otto Addo and has also managed top teams abroad, including Brighton. He has been in the game for long, and I think he is now lacking ideas. And without a strong backing from his assistants, it will be difficult for him."

Owusu further criticized Hughton's decision-making, expressing his discontent with the extensive 55-man provisional squad for the tournament. He questioned the logic behind inviting such a large number of players when there was limited time for preparation, stating, "Hughton is confused and does not know what to do."

Highlighting Ghana's recent struggles in the Nations Cup, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage in Cameroon, Owusu emphasized the team's determination to advance to the next phase of the tournament. The Black Stars are set to face Mozambique in their final group game on Monday, January 22, 2024.

The defeat against Cape Verde has left Ghana in a challenging position in their group, currently occupying the bottom spot without a single point. As the team endeavors to redeem itself, the spotlight remains on Hughton and his ability to steer the Black Stars toward success in the upcoming matches.
