As part of a government-led institutional overhaul, Ghana’s sports sector has been placed under the newly established Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
This restructuring, carried out under Section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C. Law 327), separates the previously unified youth and sports portfolios, ending their long-standing association.
In addition, a standalone Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has been created to focus solely on youth affairs.
The restructuring reduces the number of ministries from 30 to 23, streamlining government operations.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to announce a new Sports Minister next week, with former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuije and Wisdom Kobla Woyome, chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, among the leading candidates for the role.
