Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has revealed that German legend Manuel Neuer has long been his biggest source of inspiration between the posts.
The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper, who has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past year, says he modelled his game on the Bayern Munich and Germany great from his earliest days as a developing keeper.
“Neuer has always been the goalkeeper that I look up to right from my early days when I was developing my craft,” Asare told reporters after Ghana’s 1–0 win over Comoros in the World Cup qualifiers.
“The way he kicks, communicates and generally how he conducts himself within the box is what I wanted to emulate.”
Asare has emerged as one of Ghana’s standout performers since making his senior debut earlier this year. The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League Goalkeeper of the Season has yet to concede in the ongoing league campaign and has let in just one goal across the Black Stars qualifying matches.
The 33-year-old’s assured displays have established him as Ghana’s first-choice keeper, and he could be set to make his World Cup debut in North America next year, a fitting reward for a player who continues to draw inspiration from one of football's greats.
