Ghana football legend Mohammed Polo has expressed his disappointment after the Black Stars suffered a shocking home defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ghana surrendered a 2-0 lead at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, allowing The Gambia to score four goals and complete a stunning comeback.

Speaking to Swiit FM, the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner admitted he was surprised by the result and questioned the atmosphere surrounding the national team.

“I was shocked,” Polo said.

“I went to the Ghana FA headquarters for a personal engagement on the same matchday, but I didn’t know the Black Stars were going to play. There were no signs of the match in town, and I think there is a problem somewhere.”

Despite the growing criticism of the Ghana Football Association, Polo refused to blame GFA president Kurt Okraku for the Black Stars’ poor performances.

“To be frank, Kurt Okraku’s-led administration is striving to develop Ghana football, but things are not going as expected. I think Ghana is being hunted spiritually. There is a problem which must be rectified.”

“Kurt Okraku is performing; he is not the problem, and I must be honest. I have been in the game since 1972, and I think Ghana football is rich now under Kurt.”

The former Hearts of Oak star also argued that the GFA president should not be blamed for club performances in continental competitions.

“Just recently, Medeama and Nations FC were eliminated from the African club competitions. You fault Kurt Okraku for what? Is he a footballer?”

The Black Stars remain bottom of Group C in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers after losing their opening two matches — a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké followed by the 4-2 collapse against The Gambia in Accra.
