The Black Stars endured a difficult evening as they fell to an embarrassing 5-1 defeat against Austria in their pre-World Cup friendly at the Ernst Happel Stadium. 

The four-time World Cup champions were ultimately outclassed by Ralf Rangnick’s side in a game that serves as preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Austria took the lead in the 12th minute through Marcel Sabitzer from the penalty spot, with the hosts holding a 1-0 advantage at half-time.

The second half, however, saw the game open up as Michael Gregoritsch struck to extend the lead before Stefan Posch added the third eight minutes later. 

German-based duo Carney Chukwuemeka and Nicolas Seiwald found the net to complet the riot to seal a comprehensive victory.

Despite the defeat, the match provides valuable lessons for coach Otto Addo as they continue who continues to assess the squad and his tactics ahead of the global showpiece.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to their next test against Germany on Monday, March 30 in Stuttgart.
