Ghana U20 head coach Maxwell Konadu has promised to rebuild his squad ahead of the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations following Ghana’s disappointing exit from the WAFU B U-20 Championship.
The Black Satellites wrapped up their campaign in Côte d’Ivoire with a goalless draw against Togo, finishing third in Group B and missing out on a place in the semi-finals.
Despite the early exit, Ghana have already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 U-20 AFCON as tournament hosts, giving the technical team enough time to prepare a stronger side for the continental competition.
Reflecting on the campaign, Konadu admitted the team’s objective was to win the tournament but stressed that significant changes would be made before the next assignment.
“We came here to win, but it didn’t work out. We will reorganise ourselves. Definitely, we will not present the same team for the AFCON next year,” he said.
The former Black Stars assistant coach explained that the tournament was used to assess home-based players, with some proving they have the quality to compete at the highest level while others fell short of expectations.
“For this tournament, we maintained the home-based boys because we wanted to see what they could offer. Some of them have shown that, given the opportunity, they can really excel. It is good that we have seen what they can do. Some couldn’t make the mark, while others showed they have what it takes. Now we have to prepare very well because without proper preparation you cannot win tournaments. I think exposure made the difference,” Konadu added.
With nearly a year to prepare for the tournament on home soil, the Black Satellites technical team is expected to cast its net wider, monitor both home-based and foreign-based talents, and build a more competitive squad capable of challenging for the continental title.
