Former Black Stars midfielder, Sulley Ali Muntari, has admitted that Michael Essien was the kingpin of the Ghanaian national team during their era.

Both Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien had more than a decade spell with the Black Stars, from 2002- 2014.

Sulley Muntari, 37, played in three successive world cup finals for the Black Stars, whereas Michael Essien, 39, featured in the 2006 and 2014 world cup for Ghana, missing 2010 mundial because of injury.

Muntari, currently with Hearts of Oak, admits that Michael Essien was the pivot that held the team together in midfield.

"When we were in the Black Stars, I used to rotate positions with Laryea and Appiah, but Essien was always the constant person in the midfield to protect us and also start transitions," he said on GTV.

"He was the pillar of our team," he admitted.

Ghana have qualified for the world cup in Qatar, after missing Russia 2018 Finale, and will be playing Uruguay, South Korea and Portugal in the group stage.
