Former defender of Asante Kotoko Awal Mohammed has revealed that his monthly paycheck during his time at the club was GH₵500.
The former Black Stars centre-back said; "Now the salary is even better. I was taking 500gh as my salary at Kotoko. They are being paid better today, so this is the time the supporters should troop to the stadium to support the boys. They shouldn’t look at their monies they are taking," he told Ghanasportspage.com as quoted by Kickgh.com
"I didn’t lack anything because I was a Kumasi boy, I didn’t buy anything with the salary I was taking at Kotoko. Upon all the salary I was receiving, I was still going home to eat and other stuff because you can’t do anything with the 500 cedis."
Awal began his career with the West African Football Academy, then Feyenoord Academy. On 10 July 2010, he joined ASEC Mimosas on loan.
After his return from Asec Mimosas in November 2010 to Feyenoord Academy, he was sold to Asante Kotoko in the 2010/11 GPL season.
In August 2012, Awal who was part of the Black Stars team that finished as runners-up in the 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea joined South African Premier Soccer League club Maritzburg United.
Awal is currently unattached after last playing for Indian side Sreenidi Deccan FC in the 2021/22 football season.
He returned to Kotoko in the 2016/17 season for a second stint and played a key role in the squad that won the President Cup and the FA Cup in 2017 before leaving the club to join Kuwait Premier League side Al-Fahaheel SC in 2018.
