The Ghanaian top-flight league which has been sponsorless since 2018, is set to receive a bumper headline sponsorship deal ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) has entered into advanced discussion with Africa's leading sports and digital entertainment company, BetKing over a mouthwatering sponsorship package for the Ghana Premier League, Kickgh.com can exclusively report.
Kickgh.com can exclusively report that officials of Betking and the Ghana Football Association led by Kurt Okraku have been holding talks over the sponsorship package for the Premier League since last month.
A source with knowledge of the deal told Kickgh.com that an agreement could be reached between both parties in the coming days for an official announcement.
“There has been discussions and meetings between Betking and the GFA for a takeover as the official headline sponsors of the Ghana Premier League,” the source told Kickgh.com
“The deal worth millions of dollars which I can't disclose the figures for some reasons. It is about 80% done,”
The current administration of the Ghana Football Association headed by Kurt E.S Okraku, has been in search for a headline sponsor for the country's top-tier league in the last three years.
The Football Association has secured some partnership deals for the Premier League from companies such as Electroland Ghana, Melcom, ZAZ Produkte, Tempo Balls, InterCity STC and Chinese Pay-TV operators, Startimes as the official broadcasters.
The Ghana Premier League is set to become the second top-flight competition to secure a sponsorship deal from Betking after Ethiopia, which has been headlined by the Africa's leading betting company since 2020.
The Ghana Premier League has been without a headline sponsor for three years after a five-year contract worth $10 million signed in 2018 between the Football Association and Zylofon Cash ended prematurely following the dissolution of the financial institution
The lack of headline sponsor since 2018 has increased the financial burden of clubs, which sometimes put the Ghana Premier League in jeopardy.
In the recently ended 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season, title winners Asante Kotoko received Gh¢ 250,000 ($31,124) with Medeama and Bechem United pocketing Gh¢150,000 ($18,624) and Gh¢ 80,000 respectively for finishing second and third at the end of the season.
BetKing founded on 2018, is a sports betting and digital entertainment company offering online services in Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Ghana.
Africa's leading entertainment company, Multichoice, currently owns 49% of Betking after increasing its shareholding in the online gambling company by 29% in a $281.5 million deal last year.
Betking, widely known as one of the leading sports betting sites in Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and Ghana was founded by Byron Petzer and Adekunle Adeniji.
Nigeria legendary footballer, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha is the brand ambassador of Betking.
