Chief Executive Officer of Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah has asked for $1m support fund from government and strongly believe they will do incredibly well in Africa.
The Porcupine Warriors will represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League next season after being crowned champions of the ongoing Ghana Premier League season with three games to spare.
Kotoko had 59 points before their outstanding GPL week 29 fixture and needed just a point to be declared winners and that eventually happened after holding AshantiGold SC in Obuasi last Thursday.
In an interview with Akoma FM, the enterprising CEO has stated government gives Black Stars huge sums of money for tournaments and strongly believes if less than half of those amount are giving to them, they will perform very well in Africa. He said;
“If the Government of the day is able to vote $6m or $8m for Black Stars for the Afcon, why can't the same Government help clubs participating in Africa with a $1m support.” He quizzed
“Winning the league only gives the winner $30000 which cannot play one home game in Africa, so the price money is not exciting.”
“No sponsorship for the league and we cannot use the same budget here to perform well in Africa. The likes of Al Ahly runs a budget of $90m a year, we at Kotoko this season at my time runs about $2m. So if we want to go and do well, we should prepare and have the support of the entire nation.
“However, I will like to send a message to the entire nation, His Excellence Nana Addo Danquah that Ghana used to have four slots in Africa, but now we have two due to the fact that we don't really performed well when we go."
"When Kotoko goes to Africa this time around, we are not only there for the interest of the club but the entire nation.” He concluded
