Enraged Asante Kotoko fans took drastic action on Sunday afternoon, damaging their own stand at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in response to a controversial call made by the referee during their 2-2 draw with Nations FC.

The turmoil erupted when referee Abdul Latif Qadir awarded the home side a penalty in stoppage time while Kotoko was leading 2-1. Agitated fans started throwing bottles onto the pitch, causing a temporary suspension of the game. Kotoko manager Prosper Ogum Narteh and some team officials had to intervene to calm the fans down before the penalty was executed at their end of the field.

The irate fans also went further to uproot the seats in the away stand.

Dr. Kwame Kyei, former Board chairman and owner of the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, has called for a ceasefire and unity among the fans. He emphasized that the stadium belongs to Kotoko and that fans had damaged their own property. He assured that he would cover the costs of the broken chairs.

Dr. Kyei also advised fans to reflect on the lessons learned from the May 9th disaster. However, as of now, Asante Kotoko has yet to release a statement condemning the actions of their fans.
