Ghana Football Association Executive Council (EXCO) member and Director Of Legal Affairs of Berekum Chelsea, Nana Oduro Sarfo has ignited controversy with remarks downplaying the status of Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most decorated football clubs.
In an interview on Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM, Sarfo audaciously compared Asante Kotoko to newly promoted Ghana Premier League side Young Apostles, suggesting the club's reputation is exaggerated.
"What’s so special about Kotoko? They are just like Young Apostles. Stop this hype you’re giving them. You always give their supporters false hopes," Sarfo stated, calling out what he perceives as the unwarranted attention given to the Porcupine Warriors.
Asante Kotoko's current season has begun with a win and a draw, but Sarfo’s remarks have added pressure ahead of their crucial Ghana Premier League Week 4 fixture against Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park this weekend.
The match is now seen as a litmus test for Kotoko, who will be eager to respond on the pitch and reinforce their status as one of Ghana’s football giants.
Both teams go into the encounter on the back of one win and one draw respectively and are one game behind after three matches due to Samartex and Nsoatreman FC’s involvement in Africa.
Chelsea kick started the campaign with a stalemate against debutant, Vision FC followed by a narrow win over Karela United.
Kotoko, on the other hand, commenced the season with a win against Karela United before sharing the spoils with Young Apostles.
