Aduana FC have called for stronger security for teams travelling to matches after the death of forward Dominic Frimpong.
The 20-year-old striker, who was on loan at Berekum Chelsea, died after armed robbers attacked the Bibires team bus. The incident happened on Sunday night as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex.
Speaking to 3Sports, Aduana FC Chief Executive Collins Atta Poku described the loss as very painful and called for urgent action to protect players and officials.
“To know someone that closely, and work with someone closely like that, it is painful… It’s very painful,” he said.
He said teams should be given police escort when travelling for matches, especially at night, even though he understands the pressure on security services.
“It’s necessary that we get police on our buses when we are going to these games. We know the numbers are a little stretched, but we have to do something about it at some point to make sure that we have enough security on the bus when we are travelling, especially at night,” he added.
Atta Poku also explained that some clubs are forced to travel late after matches because they cannot afford accommodation, which increases the risk.
“A lot of planning goes into it; sometimes it's difficult, and we don’t have the resources to sleep over in such situations,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says it has started a manhunt to find those responsible for the attack.
