Cameroon failed to storm and set the tone in their opening match of the World Cup against Switzerland as Rigobert Song's team were stunned 1-0, making their Group G opponents to unsettle their ambitions of totally taking charge of the game and frustrating them. 

 

 

Coming into the match on the back of an unbeaten qualifying campaign, the Red Crosses were beeming with confidence in the early stages of the first half, with good chunck of possession inside Cameroon's area.

 

Rigobert Song's favoured 4-1-2-3 formation was designed to dilute the Red Crosses attacking ambitions in the game, and before the fixture, The Indomitable Lions were hoping to secure all three points but they were unfortunate to, rather, secure a national calamity for a nation which was demanding success this time in the Mundial.

 

Breel Embolo's superb goal inspired Switzerland as the hosts eased through to snatch the win, finishing top of Group G.

 

The Cameroonian-born AS Monaco forward received an accurate pull-back pass from Xherdan Shaqiri and clinically fired the ball into the back of the net inside the six-yard box to put the Indomitable Lions under the sword at the Al-Janoub Stadium in Al-Wakrah.

Despite the fact that this was Embolo's first goal for Switzerland in the Mundial, his celebration was rather muted as he simply put his hands up, before being hugged by his teammates.

 

Unperturbed by the goal, the Indomitable Lions dispatched themselves into hunting for a quick equalizer, but Yann Sommer stood firm to deny Choupo-Moting and Zambo Anguissa with a pair of momentous saves.

 

Cameroon came close in causing an upset again, but Yann Sommer rose to the task to make an heavy save from a Bryan Mbeumo and Toko-Ekambi's rebound which wastefully flew over the bar.

As the first half progressed steadily, the Red Crosses regained control of the game, and ruined a glorious opportunity to take the lead into half-time, after Akanji took a glimpse of an header to narrowly go past the target.

 

With 25 minutes remaining, Switzerland were hoping to double their lead when Ruben Vargas hammered a close range shot towards goal, but Andre Onana pouced to divert the ball around the goal post.

 

During the death minutes of the match, Cameroon pushed for a late equalizer but the Red Crosses safeguard their defence to pin down the Indomitable Lions attack, to snatch all three points and make the best start to their global tournament.
