Portugal national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a 23-year career with the national team.

The announcement comes just a day before head coach Jorge Jesus is expected to name his squad for the upcoming November international window.

The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision in a video message on social media, saying the time had come to hand over Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt to the next generation. He described representing his country as a privilege and responsibility throughout his long career.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner made his Portugal debut in August 2003 and went on to become the country’s most capped player and leading goalscorer.

He leaves the national team with 234 appearances, 146 goals and 46 assists, setting records that place him among the most accomplished players in international football.

His career with Portugal also brought major silverware, including the European Championship in 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. The Euro 2016 triumph was Portugal’s first major international trophy, while the Nations League victories added to his achievements as captain.

Ronaldo’s international career spanned more than two decades and included six appearances at the FIFA World Cup. His final chapter with Portugal follows a period of tension with Jesus over his role in the team, after which the forward left the national team camp during the September international window.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure marks the end of a significant era for Portuguese football, following 23 years in which he helped shape the country’s success on the international stage.
