Real Madrid have asked about the situation of Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay as negotiations over a new contract with the Italian club fail to make progress.
The Scotland international is open to the possibility of moving to the Spanish club if he receives a call from former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, according to Italian newspaper Il Mattino. McTominay played under Mourinho at Old Trafford and has previously been described by the Portuguese coach as “my son”.
Napoli and the player’s representatives have yet to reach an agreement over an improved deal, with the continued deadlock potentially increasing the prospect of McTominay leaving in the coming period. Real Madrid have already made enquiries about his position, while a number of Premier League clubs are also understood to be interested.
McTominay, 29, is under contract at Napoli until June 2028. However, Il Mattino reports that renewing his terms is not currently an urgent priority for club president Aurelio De Laurentiis. That differs from the position of those close to the player, who want his contractual future resolved quickly.
Real Madrid’s interest is linked to McTominay’s performances since he moved to Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 for 30.5m euros. He scored 14 goals and provided four assists in 44 appearances last season, and was named the best player in the Italian league for the 2024-25 campaign.
Mourinho could prove an influential figure if the Premier League midfielder is presented with the opportunity to join Real Madrid. He gave McTominay his first-team debut for Manchester United in 2017 and has maintained a close relationship with the player.
Asked whether he would consider joining Real Madrid if Mourinho contacted him, McTominay said: “If that happened, I would think about it.”
