Togbe Afede XIV, who is the king of the Asogli State in the Volta Region is one of the widely recognized traditional rulers in Ghana and globally as one of the successful businessman.

 
 
REAL NAME 
 
Before installed as the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State in the Volta Region of Ghana, he was born on 23rd April, 1957 to the late Cpl. Patrick Akpo and Madam Rose Anyawoe, both from Ho Bankoe as James Akpo.
 
His twin brother died at a young age.
 
EDUCATION
 
Being the grandson of Herman Ladzi Akpo, who was a renowned Catechist and educationist, James Akpo, as the Agbogbomefia was called, together with his late twin brother, was enrolled in primary class one at the Ho Bankoe Roman Catholic Boys School in 1961 at the age of four.
 
Togbe Afede had his secondary education at Kpedze Secondary School and Labone Secondary School where he sat for his ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels respectively. In 1979, he obtained a BSc in Administration (Accounting) from the University of Ghana School of Administration. 
 
He later gained a Master’s in Business Administration from the prestigious Yale University in the United States of Ghana.
 
WORKING LIFE
 
Togbe Afede XIV began his working life at the now defunct Bank for Housing and Construction as a planning officer performing analysis of projects undertaking by loan applicants. He continued at the Cocoa Marketing Board as an accountant before moving to Nigeria to lecture in Economics and Accounting at Sokoto State Polytechnics School of Management Studies in Nigeria.

Because of lack of financial resources, Togbe was unable to take up offers of admission to The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania (1984 and 1985) and admission with fellowship awards to Stanford University's Graduate School of Business (1984 and 1985). After committing his scanty resources to the pursuit of his Wharton and Stanford aspirations, Togbe was unable to file any applications in 1986. However, he was awarded a substantial fellowship by Yale University. So Togbe finally received his MBA from the Yale School of Management in May 1989.
 
In 1989, he returned to Ghana, accepting an appointment as a lecturer at the School of Administration, University of Ghana. He taught Financial Accounting (BSc) and Accounting Theory (MBA) until 1994 when he teamed up with others to establish Databank Financial Services. He went on to found his own investment firm, Strategic African Securities (SAS). 
 
In 1999, he set up Strategic Initiatives Limited, a private equity and portfolio investments firm. He played a vital role in the development of Ghana’s capital markets, which was then in an infant stage and is credited with the publication of the first-ever stock market indices in 1991.

Togbe Afede XIV is an investment banker with more than 20 years’ experience. He is the Executive Chairman of World Trade Centre Accra and founder of the SAS Finance Group Ltd, comprising of Strategic African Securities Ltd, a stock brokerage and corporate finance advisory firm, and SAS Investment Management Ltd, an asset management firm.
 
Togbe also founded Strategic Initiatives Ltd (SIL), a portfolio and private equity investment firm, and is the co-founder of Databank Financial Services, Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Ltd, Africa World Airlines Ltd, Cloud Ghana Ltd and Lighting & Construction Africa Co., Ltd.
 
Togbe’s other current directorships include:
 
• Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club Ltd (Chairman), Ghana’s premier football club
• Africa Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership, a partnership of African development organizations
• Africa World Airlines Ltd (Co-chairman), a domestic and regional carrier
• Aluworks Ghana Ltd, an aluminium rolling mill listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE)
• Ensign College of Public Health, a private university training public health practitioners
• National Investment Bank Ltd (Chairman), a majority state-owned, publicly traded universal bank
• Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Ltd, an independent power generating company
 
Togbe Afede has also at various times, held or continues to hold positions on several governing boards including those of Aluworks Limited, Bank of Ghana, National Investment Bank, China Africa Company limited, Pioneer Kitchenware Limited, Trans Africa Telecom Ltd and the Volta Region Development Agency. 
 
He is currently the majority shareholder of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club Limited and chairs the board. In 2015, he joined the Board of Directors of the World Trade Centre and is chairman of World Trade Centre Accra.
 
In 2009, he served as a member of the Government Transition Team and the Head of the Committee on the Economy, leading the preparation of the 2009 budget. He was also a member of the President’s Economic Advisory Council between 2009 and 2013. 
 
He was the President of the National House of Chiefs from 2016 to 2020.
