Former Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé has insisted that African coaches possess the quality to compete with their European and South American counterparts.

Faé, who guided the Ivory Coast national team to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations title, believes African coaches need more support, patience and better working conditions to succeed.

Speaking at a CAF strategic conference in Cape Verde, the Ivorian tactician criticised the frequent dismissal of coaches on the continent, arguing that constant changes prevent managers from implementing their ideas effectively.

“For progress to be made and for African football to continue to grow, African leaders must give coaching staff time to do their work. They have ideas, but football doesn’t happen overnight; it takes hard work and time,” Faé said.

He added that African coaches deserve the same opportunities and resources given to foreign coaches.

“We’re every bit as good as the Europeans or the South Americans, but we really need the same conditions and the same mindset as those teams that are winning,” he stated.

Faé believes the lack of proper structures, resources and long-term planning often affects the performance of African coaches rather than a shortage of technical ability.

The 62-year-old enjoyed a remarkable AFCON campaign with Ivory Coast after taking charge midway through the tournament, leading the Elephants to a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the final to win their third continental title.

Although his tenure later ended after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Faé continues to advocate for greater investment and confidence in African coaching talent.
