Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has tipped Nigeria, Ivory Coast and hosts Morocco as the favourites to lift the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025.

Speaking on the red carpet of the 2025 CAF Awards, Gyan expressed confidence in the Super Eagles despite their recent heartbreak in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“I think we've got a lot of giants who are going there. Ghana is out which we are very disappointed but it is okay we have qualified for the World Cup. Nigeria did well; they were close last two years. Ivory Coast did well, so we have a lot of teams. Morocco is also a strong contender who are also doing well. I will say these three countries that I have mentioned, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco are favourites,” he said.

Gyan’s backing comes after Nigeria lost to DR Congo in the African play-offs, a defeat that prevented them from securing a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Nonetheless, the former Black Stars striker believes the Super Eagles have the quality to go all the way in the continental showpiece, where they were runners-up in the previous edition in Ivory Coast.

The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is set to kick off on 21 December 2025 and conclude on 18 January 2026.

Meanwhile, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi was named the 2025 CAF Player of the Year award held at the Mohamed VI Polytechnic University on Wednesday evening.
