Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly are keeping close tabs on the best players in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, with a couple of players linked with the Reds.
27-year-old South Africa key cog Teboho Mokoena's explosive performances in the AFCON have attracted interest from Al Ahly officials who have been following Bafana Bafana's games as they have their winger Percy Tau in the team.
But for a couple of days now, incessant reports has it that Mokoena is their top target, although getting a deal for the Mamelodi Sundowns’ star might be difficult.
Unsurprisingly, Al Ahly are not the only club in the race to sign him. Mokoena has also been linked with club's in England, Germany, Netherlands and Spain.
A source close to South African tabloid 'The Citizen' has revealed that the midfielder has no desire to move to Cairo.
“Teboho is focussed on Bafana right now because the tournament is not over, but he is well aware of what is happening.
“A lot of teams have made an inquiry over his services, and there are others who showed interest before, but never followed up.
“Now they are back after what they have seen from him at Afcon. But, the only offers that will be considered will be at leagues in England, France, the Netherlands, and Germany.
“I heard the Al Ahly thing, but I don’t think he would consider it. We have to remember that he has a contract with Sundowns, and at the end of the day, they have to make a decision as well. Plus they have been very good to him and he loves the club so much.”
Mokoena has played every single minute in South Africa’s road to the semi-finals of the 2023 AFCON, scoring a nervy winner against Morocco in the round of 16.
