End of the road for Asante Kotoko in the CAF Confederation Cup after an embarrassing 5-1 defeat against Wydad Athletic Club at the Mohammed V Stadium in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup
The first leg finished 0-1 for Wydad AC in the first leg last Sunday, courtesy Joseph Bakasu’s lone goal - making it 6-1 on aggregate
Coach Karim Zito named a strong line up comprising skipper Samba O’Neil, Seth Kwadwo, Hubert Gyau, Peter Amidu, Albert Amoah and others, and looked very confident to coming out victorious.
Wydad Athletic Club opened the scoring account in just less than a minute from kickoff courtesy Hamza Hannouri who headed into the net a close range from a teasing cross from the left flanks.
Asante Kotoko came so close to levelling the score after Acquah Amidu was served with a big chance just at the edge of the box but blasted wide for a goal kick.
In the 18th minute, the Porcupine Warriors equalized through captain Samba O’Neil who jumped to connect with a towering header from Lord Amoah’s cross.
Burkinabe international Stephanie Aziz Ki struck from close range subsequently to restore the lead for Wydad AC as it finished 2-1 at home.
Nine minutes into the second half, Thembikosi Lorch won himself a penalty after running into goalkeeper Aziz Haruna Dari. He expected himself for the kick and did a beautiful panenka to extend the lead.
In the last five minutes plus additional time, the Red Castles continued with the riots producing two more goals through Oussama Zemraoui and Mohammed Bouchouari to seal the win as it finished 5-1 (6-1 on aggregate) at full-time
Asante Kotoko are expected back in the country from tomorrow henceforth to prepare for the remainder of the 2025/26 football season.
